About Baptist Health System School of Health Professions

Baptist Health System School of Health Professions evolved from a private cluster of health science schools sponsored by the Baptist Health System. The Department of Professional Nursing began as the first school, chartered in 1903. Surgical Technology followed in 1955, Medical Imaging Technology in 1959, and Vocational Nursing in 1988. In 2004, video teleconference distance learning was added to provide nursing education at sites in Phoenix, Arizona and continued through the completion of the project in 2009.  In 2009, the School of Health Professions granted its first Associate of Applied Science degree in Nursing.  Today the Baptist School of Health Professions provides a variety of online and resident programs.

In 1979, these schools of nursing and allied health were administered in Baptist Health System under the auspices of the Institute of Health Education. A change of name in December 2003 also marked a change in focus as the program moved toward a more academic model. Now known as the Baptist Health System School of Health Professions, it includes the Department of Professional Nursing, the Department of Surgical Technology, the Department of Medical Imaging Technology, and the Department of Vocational Nursing, as well as support programs that enhance learning at all levels in the Baptist Health System. The reputation these programs have for graduating highly competent and caring graduates continues with this graduating class. These graduates will be entering the dynamic health care environment at a time when their knowledge and skills will be highly valued and sought after.
